In any effective Welding quality control program , firstly and most importantly each project must be inspected by Qualified Welding Inspectors or Welding Engineers .
Inspections
Codes and Standards will always stipulate the performance of a full Visual Inspection, please refer to our article on Visual Inspection in our News section for more information, however even when nondestructive or destructive methods are specified in Standards, they are actually meant to supplement the basic Visual Inspection.
Interpass Welding – Multipass Welding
When conducting Welding inspections during the Welding operation, Inspectors must rely on the Welding procedures to provide a basis for inspection. The Welding Procedure will provide important aspects of the Welding operations including welding process, materials, specific techniques, preheat and interpass temperatures.
One feature should be evaluated during the welding operation is Multipass welding and Interpass temperatures . Firstly interpass cleaning , if the welder fails to clean the weld deposit between individual passes, there is a great possibility that slag inclusions or incomplete fusion could result. The cleaning can be accomplished by any method which yields the appropriate results , chipping hammers grinding for convex welds, wire brushes etc
The Inspectors may also check and monitor the interpass temperature . The interpass temperature should be measured outside the joint, typically 3-4 cm from the joint before beginning the next pass . The Inspector also monitors the correct placement of individual weld passes.
Cleaning, Interpass temperatures, the correct use of a temperature Indicator, placement of individual welds, and even distortion needs to be monitored by the Inspectors for Multipass Welding
VIETNAMESE EXORTS NOTES
Even though the conforming of the Interpass temperature and conforming to the Welding Procedures, is really the responsibility of the Welder, at our factories the Welding Inspectors and myself check to assure that the Welder understands the welding requirements and the use of temperature Indicators as we feel Inspectors and myself have a better grasp of the overall quality expected.
Vietnamese Exports have a fully qualified Welding Engineer and / or a Welding Inspector available and present 100% at the Factories during projects together with myself [ Welding Inspector ,Level 1 ] to monitor and insure Welders are aware and tested for all Welding procedures .
