THE WELDING INSPECTOR
AS/NZS 1554.1 states – Welding shall be carried out under the Supervision of a Welding Supervisor employed by or contracted to the fabricator

The job of a Welding inspector requires that the Inspector posses or have access to a great deal of information remembering each particular project can have requirements that make it unique . The simple statement “ THE WELDS MUST BE GOOD “ is not sufficient information for judging the weld quality. Inspectors are expected to evaluate other fabrication aspects besides weld quality . Welding Inspectors can not evaluate a structure without information from the designer, also when and how to evaluate the welding.

To satisfy the Welding Inspector, numerous documents must be available , these documents include Drawings , specifications and Standards. It is essential for the Inspector to have an opportunity to study all applicable documents before the start of the Job. Some information include the following

Part size and geometry
Filler materials to be used
Requirements of hold points
Processing details
Processes to be used
Specifications for NDT inspection
Extent of inspection
Acceptance/rejection criteria
Qualifications for personnal
Procedure and Welder qualifications
Material control requirements

DRAWINGS
Drawings describe the part or structure in detail , dimensions, tolerances, notes, weld and welding details these should always be reviewed by the Inspector. Drawings also help the Inspector to understand how each component is assembled and can assist in identification of problems that could arise during fabrication

MATERIALS
An important aspect of fabrication is the identification and traceability of material . The Inspector may be required to assist in the control of materials in their regular duties . If this is the case the Inspector must be capable of properly identifying material and comparing that information with the related documentation
